IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)
in Birmingham
Target redness, pigmentation, and signs of ageing with IPL therapy at Hello Skin Clinic. Also known as Intense Pulsed Light treatment, IPL uses carefully controlled flashes of light to treat a range of skin concerns, leaving your complexion clearer, smoother, and more even over time.
Suitable for the face and body, IPL is commonly used to treat sun damage, rosacea, age spots, broken capillaries, and general uneven tone. It’s a non-invasive treatment with minimal downtime, offering long-term improvements in both skin texture and tone.

What Is IPL and How Does It Work?

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) therapy delivers broad-spectrum light into the skin in short, controlled bursts. Unlike laser, which uses a single wavelength, IPL uses multiple wavelengths to target pigment, blood vessels, or bacteria just beneath the skin’s surface.
The light energy is absorbed by melanin (pigment) or haemoglobin (blood), where it is converted into heat. This gently breaks down imperfections while stimulating collagen and skin renewal, without damaging the surrounding tissue.
At Hello Skin Clinic, we start with a full consultation and patch test to ensure your skin is suitable for treatment. Each session is tailored to your specific concern, whether that’s facial redness, sun spots, or a general refresh. Most treatments take 20 to 45 minutes depending on the area.

Frequently Asked Questions About IPL treatment
Is IPL treatment safe?
Yes. IPL is a widely used and well-studied treatment. When performed by trained professionals using quality equipment, it’s safe for most people with minimal risk.
What skin concerns can IPL treat?
IPL is effective for sun damage, pigmentation, thread veins, rosacea, redness, acne scars, and dull or uneven skin tone.
How many sessions of IPL will I need?
A course of 3 to 6 sessions is typically recommended for best results, spaced 3 to 4 weeks apart. Maintenance sessions can help prolong the benefits.
Is there any downtime after IPL treatment?
Downtime is minimal. You may experience redness, mild swelling, or slight darkening of pigmented spots, which usually settles within a few days.
Does IPL hurt?
You may feel a light snapping or warm sensation during treatment, similar to the flick of an elastic band. Most clients find it manageable.
Can IPL be used on all skin types?
IPL works best on fair to medium skin tones. It’s not suitable for very dark skin, as the light may not differentiate safely between pigment and skin tone. We’ll assess this during your consultation.
